Homemade Pizza Ideas

My family loves to get creative with their homemade pizza ideas. We have an outdoor countertop pizza oven we use year-round, but it is especially great in the summer when the house is full of kids, friends, and family. There are so many pizza variations to try, and it is fun to have guests dive in and get their hands dirty. Have them work the dough on a lightly-floured surface as they shape 10-inch rounds and add their toppings. We prepare a variety of fresh pizza toppings ahead of time and place them in separate bowls. The key is not to get too carried away when selecting toppings. Keep it under five or six choices. Slide a rectangle pizza peel under the pizza for transferring the pie to the oven. Because the pizzas cook so fast, you’ll receive instant gratification as you and your guests experiment making a variety of pizzas. If you cook your pizzas in a conventional oven, set the temperature to 500 and the pizza should take about 10 minutes. Ours in the pizza oven takes about 3 minutes.

Toppings Ideas

Some of our best pizza experiments have included a “dessert pie” with Nutella, raspberries, and Marshmallows and our family favorite is a plain “goat-cheese pie with fresh figs.” Here are some ideas for toppings – some unconventional: Artisan Cheeses (fresh): Mozzarella, Manchego, Goat, Fontina, Gruyere, Cheddar, Creme Fraiche, Monterey Jack, Shaved Parmigiana, Romano, Asiago, Burrata, Ricotta, Blue Cheese Herbs & Seasonings: Basil, Chives, Parsley, Red Pepper Flakes, Sea Salt, Cilantro, Rosemary Fruit: Blueberries, Blackberries, Strawberries, Peaches, Pineapple, Cherries, Figs Meats: Sausage, Chicken, Pepperoni, Shrimp, Bacon, Prosciutto, Kielbasa Just For Fun: Roasted Garlic, Red Onions, Jalapenos, Vegetables & Leafy Greens, Olives, Pistachios, Hazelnuts, Pine Nuts, Pesto

Get the best pizza making tools:

Using pizza tools really helps. Buy a round pizza screen to have on hand when you want to slow the browning on the bottom. If you really want to get fancy, buy stacking dough boxes to store dough while rising or resting. A rectangle perforated peel makes transferring the pizza in and out of the oven safe and easy.

Here are some great homemade pizza ideas and recipes to try.

TIP: If you don’t have the time to make the dough ahead of time, head to your local pizzeria. They are happy to sell you dough, sauce and/or cheese separately for you to make your own homemade pizzas.
