Can You Name That Famous Kitchen? (Round 1)

My fondest memories growing up as a child on Long Island’s North Shore originated in my Mom’s kitchen. Being part of an extremely large extended Italian family with 40 first cousins and 22 aunts & uncles, the focus was always on food — four-hour Sunday dinners followed by a several rounds of PoKeNo and mounds of nuts and nutcrackers scattered around the dining table which, by the way, extended all the way through to the living room.

Today, I smile at the moments when I see my three kids and three dogs wrestle each other for their territorial spot in front of our AGA while the brownies are baking. Maybe I’m biased when I say the kitchen is the most important room in the home, but I have vivid memories of my own kitchen AND other people’s kitchens. I will never forget the time when a neighbor wouldn’t let me wash my hands because she “just dried the sink.” …or the red splatter marks of the gravy (not sauce) bubbling on top of my aunt’s avocado green oven. …or what about the casual and lighthearted (or sometimes bloody & gory) kitchen scenes we enjoyed on television or in the movies?

After spending this last month being a complete workaholic launching Shopkitchendesigns.com, expanding the showroom, and designing our new exclusive Allmilmo Long Island studio, I decided to lighten things up with this upcoming series of posts …a little game…  Can You Name That Famous Kitchen? I’ve gathered some well-known kitchen scenes from the movies and TV. Those presented today come to us courtesy of Julia, one of my favorite bloggers, at Hooked on Houses.

Can you guess these two famous kitchens? I will give you the answers on Friday. My next Can you Name That Famous Kitchen? post (Round 2) will be on Monday with those answers coming next Friday. I will continue each week posting new famous kitchens on Mondays and answers on Fridays until I run out of kitchens! (Of course, I blurred out the people–that would be too obvious!)

Update: After I posted this, I was bombarded with emails asking about this oven. I think we only ripped out one or two of these babies in our 29 years.  Click here for the history.

  1. Wow. I come from a family that large on my mother’s side. She was one of 12 children, one of whom was killed in WWII, but the rest all married and had children. My father was one of three, but between the two families, I have some 45 first cousins. Our families tended to spread all over, and we never got together that way, although we occasionally had smaller get togethers in Missoula, Montana (we lived in Helena at the time) with four of Mother’s siblings and families.

Kalamazoo Gourmet Barbecues has, as you know, a number of outdoor kitchen concepts on their website, but the one I like most is the one with the long outdoor dining table, because it seems like it would be tailor-made for a family gathering like the ones you’ve described. And you’re right. Kitchens are the most important room in the house, because used correctly, they can be the nucleus of any family. And in the end, family is what it’s all about.

  2. Joe, 45 first cousins! I just had family reunion for Mom’s 80th, invited everyone, and many came. I would need two of those Kalamazoo tables! That’s a beautiful setting they feature. Recently, I visited a Swedish family with a gigantic kitchen and table that extended the length of the entire window wall. It was fantastic. No kiddie table necessary. It was such an interesting space with all open shelving–stainless utensil caddies in every shape & size hanging from the backsplash–two old Garland ovens–nothing matched–every dish and serving platter different–no dishwasher (I was the towel dryer). The informality of it all was so refreshing!

So, did you guess the two famous kitchens?

  3. I think kitchen #1 is Bewitched……….also my cousin recently had a family reunion but I was unable to make it. I wish I had been there I heard everyone had a great time.

  4. My guess is “I Dream of Genie.”

  5. Some really good guesses here! No takers on the 2nd kitchen, hugh? Answers will be revealed on Friday with a new famous kitchen photo clue coming next Monday.

  6. Photo number three is Bewitched. Samantha had a Frigidaire Flair. I pulled one out of a house last year and listed it on eBay for my clients. I know more about those things than should be allowed by law. Cool appliances though.

Since photo number one has the same doors as number three, I say they are the same kitchen, Bewitched.

Number two has slab-door cabinets but the same fridge. Also Bewitched but I wonder if the door style change was done on purpose…

The second kitchen is from The Partridge Family.

  7. Paul, I see I am going to have to work really hard to stump you each week. I love a challenge. We have only ripped out one or two of those ovens. I would love to know how it sold on eBay. Did you see my time-warp post this morning from the 1964 NY World’s Fair introducing this oven–it’s priceless. This is what I find myself doing at 7 am — as scary as your knowing that Samantha had a Frigidaire Flair.

Kitchen #2 remains a mystery. I can tell you no one got that right yet!

Answers at 7 am tomorrow. Keep digging!

  8. Well, since #2 isn’t the Partridge Family my safe bet would be the Bradford’s kitchen from Eight is Enough, but that would be too easy. So I am going to say it’s a kitchen from one of the Home Alone movies.

That Flair sold in about 15 minutes with a Buy It Now price of $750 plus shipping. It was in really good shape and we should have listed it for a thousand. Oh well, my clients were ready to just throw it away. Crazy. So they bought better hardware from me with the proceeds. Gotta love a win/ win!

  9. Grace, did you announce the answer to number 2? If not, I agree with Paul, it’s definitely the kitchen from Home Alone (the original) right outside of Chicago in Hubbard Woods!!

  10. Hi Jen, Yes you are correct! The Home Alone kitchen was shot in the actual house. Here are the answers to Round 1: http://www.kitchendesigns.com/blog/index.php/2010/10/08/round-1-answers-can-you-name-the-famous-kitchen/

Try This week’s Round 2 — much harder. Here’s the link, and thanks for checking in! http://www.kitchendesigns.com/blog/index.php/2010/10/11/can-you-name-that-famous-kitchen-round-2-2/
