Unique and Exotic Ideas for Kitchen Cabinet Door Inserts

Kitchen Design, Unique & Humorous Design

You can add striking style to your kitchen by adding decorative door inserts. As glass is always a nice option, you might also like to consider using other alternatives to add personality to you kitchen! Here are some ideas and photos of the unique, creative, and exotic kitchen cabinet door inserts we have used on client projects at Kitchen Designs by Ken Kelly.

WIRE INSERTS…

Cabinetry that incorporates wire inserts has a certain nostalgic feel and is a decorative way to spice up your kitchen! Chicken wire, dove wire, or wire inserts will add a classic old world charm to any style room. Here are a few jobs we did with wire inserts. In this Roslyn, Long Island kitchen, we chose wire inserts with Wood-Mode cabinetry.  (See this  kitchen here on our YouTube channel.)

In the Brookville, Long Island kitchen below, we chose dove wire for this client. Dove wire is virtually the same as chicken wire but it has smaller holes. The cabinetry is from our Bentwood French Country Collection. (See this kitchen here.)

The first cabinet door insert is wood lattice (another nice option). The second is dove wire. You can see the black kitchen here and the brown wood kitchen here on our YouTube channel.

FABRIC, WALLPAPER, or PAINT behind glass…

With fabric or wallpaper, the possibilities are endless! Whether traditional, contemporary, country, or eclectic it works! Below is a door style from our Bentwood French Country line. Fabric was placed behind the X mullion door.

The photo below is from the Bentwood of Chicago Boutique showroom at LuxeHome . How spectacular is the kelly green back painted glass on the island island and the blue damask Farrow & Ball wallpaper on the refrigerator door panels?

MULLIONS

Mullions help to bring a nice focal point to your kitchen. There are several different styles that can be made of wood, metal, copper, etc. They range from simple to decorative. Samples shown are Wood-Mode cabinetry.

Basic style mullions are the main focal point in this classic traditional kitchen.

The X-Style Metal Mullion below add an elegant touch to this traditional Wood-Mode kitchen. The eye is drawn right to the them as they complement this kitchen design.

RATTAN…

Usually rattan is associated with outdoor furniture, but why not use it as a cabinet door insert? It adds a beautiful texture to this Wood-Mode closet cabinet.

GLASS…

Whether you’re going for a completely see through, somewhat opaque, or entirely non-see through look, there are many types of glass door options available… transparent, frosted, etched, textured, mirrored, leaded, stained glass, etc. Glass can help visually open your kitchen space, and clear glass offers a place to showcase your dishware, pottery, or other collectibles and decorative items. Here are some photos from clients’ kitchens.

See this kitchen here.

Here is a media room we did in Wood-Mode cabinetry using stained glass inserts (Sorry the photo quality is a little fuzzy from my phone). The panel covering the large-screen Television lifts hydraulically. You can’t see the ceiling detail in the photo, but we actually carved out and backlit a ledge for the client’s Lionel train tracks. They could operate the system via remote and have the trains circle the room’s ceiling.

EXOTIC TEXTURE…

We added interest to this client’s kitchen by using an exotic veneer door on the upper cabinets. See this kitchen here on our YouTube channel.

Selecting a gorgeous cabinet insert can transform your space and add a decorative and personal style to your kitchen. I’m not a fan of a floor-to-ceiling mass of wood cabinets. For 30+ years we believe a great kitchen is all about details, fantastic design, and expertly precise installation. The choices you make will absolutely influence the feel of  your kitchen. Need help sorting through it all? We’re happy to answer your questions via email, in the comments below, or by phone 516-746-3435 (Williston Park showroom).
