If you’re seeking a nostalgic, retro kitchen vibe, there are many options available in kitchen appliances, furniture, and accessories that can help you create the look. All the cabinetry including the entertainment center in this studio loft is Brookhaven by Wood-Mode. Particularly fabulous details include door inserts in metal silver dot laminate and austral glass.

141029_retro2The kitchen pairs red kitchen counter stools with an authentic movie theater popcorn maker to add a bit of character. It is a classic example of being creative with a small space. The juke box, metallic dots (shown in the photo left), and bold contrasting finishes add an element of fun to this great entertaining space. The lady statue and jukebox shown in this kitchen is from a private collection. The popcorn bowl is from Pottery Barn. Read more about this kitchenette here.

It 141029_retro1is easy to find great retro accessories and small appliances that will tie into the look you are achieving. We found this adorable “Have a Coke” retro tableware set at Amazon. It even comes with a retro waitress menu cover if you want to have a little fun with your guests. If you love the retro style, have a look at SMEG’s high-style refrigerators. They are a throwback to yesteryear and work especially well in smaller spaces.

If you have room for a banquette or table, you can add colorful fabric. Artwork and geometric rugs can launch your inspiration as well. You can even create your own geometric shapes in your backsplash tile or floor like Mario Mulea did for our client in Woodmere, Long Island. The mosaic border in blues and greens highlight the center island creating a “rug” effect against the 16×16 inch porcelain square tile.

The kitchen is kosher with a modern, eclectic mix of materials. If you love what you love and pay no attention to current style trends, embrace your eclecticism because the result could be magical. This kitchen is high in design complexity, and Mario did a phenomenal job interpreting the client’s vision and eccentric taste. The chairs, placemats, and small appliances contribute tremendously to the kitchen’s retro-style charm. You can read the story of this green kitchen and its inspiration here.
