Design a Kitchen With Recycled Materials & Be a Renovation Angel

Recently we worked with a client from Roslyn, Long Island, NY who wanted to recycle salvaged materials and incorporate her vintage finds within the new kitchen design. Needless to say, this was a very fun project (see photos below).

If you are thinking about working with salvaged pieces, there are ways to creatively design with them, and there are also opportunities to charitably donate items you are ripping out during a renovation. We work with a fantastic company called Green Demolitions (also known as Renovation Angel) that specializes in finding and selling recycled luxury materials. We have donated old showroom displays and items from clients’ kitchens we rip out. We have also sent Kitchen Designs by Ken Kelly clients to their store to purchase salvaged materials. Steve Feldman, President and Founder, started the company to pursue fund-raising for the addiction recovery outreach projects he believes saved his life. The company has grown to 30 employees with a 43,000 square foot super-store in Fairfield, NJ. It has become America’s leading recycler of luxury kitchens. His newly introduced Renovation Angel allows the donor to give back a portion of the proceeds to a charity of their choice on qualified kitchens and estate items. Here are a few examples of the recycled elements we used on this project (Kitchen Designer: Ken Kelly CKD, CBD, CR):

We were able to reuse balusters from an old staircase as decorative pilasters on the sides of the sink base cabinet.

The client had this copper pot in her garage, so we recycled this little treasure by turning it into a fabulous sink.

Here we used an old reflective fireplace back as a backsplash behind the restored antique range.

This was the best kitchen find–Breakstone’s vintage cheese boxes. We used it as a sideboard by the eating area and added a wooden top.

For the eating counter support, we used a newel post from the old staircase.
