The beneficiary is the Mill Neck Manor School for the Deaf, and there will be a lecture given by historian, Orin Finkle, on Tuesday, October 18 entitled “Gold Coast Era Mansions Then and Now.”

BRIEF HISTORY:

“Many of Long Island’s Gold Coast period mansions still depict the untold stories of the past, when the titans of industry and wealth enjoyed the many pleasures of living on Long Island.” Four residents share the history of Chestnut Manor (originally called Wolver Hollow) including businessman, Meshulam Riklis, and his aspiring movie career wife, Pia Zadora. Every new owner altered the original structure to suit their lifestyles, including the current residents who purchased  the estate approximately 20 years ago. All of the architects affiliated with the mansion were successful icons in their field. Fortunately many of the original features of classic origin remain.  (click here to see full history)

ABOUT ROOM 6:

Gentleman’s Retreat, Designed by Mario Mulea (Kitchen Designs by Ken Kelly) and Esther Carter Samain (Carter Samain Interiors)

When designers and siblings Mulea and Carter Samain first saw this room, they knew it was the one. Last updated in the 1980’s to look like an old fashioned ice cream parlor, this space now needed to function in a new century, for a new type of client and with a very clear cut point of view. While many of the other spaces in the house are of a grand scale, this space is more intimate.

Connected to the adjacent library and salon, it offers a wet bar on the opposite side of the house from the main kitchen. It is the perfect space for one or for entertaining a few, a true haven for the man of the house. We viewed this space as something more classic with a modern twist. The focal point of the room is the custom cabinetry and fireplace surround, and it was the inspiration for the fabrics, colors and finishes we chose.

Careful attention was paid to detail and even incorporated part of the design of the main staircase railing into custom leaded mirror panels used in the glassware cabinets. We paired classic menswear fabric with more contemporary ones and used a variety of textures to create a warm, inviting and relaxing space. Our Gentleman’s Retreat is the perfect place to read, catch up on email, enjoy a cocktail, play a game of chess or plan your very next adventure.
